David and Goliath

Israel and the Philistines were at war when the Philistines sent out their champion, Goliath, a giant warrior who challenged Israel to send one man to fight him. For forty days, Goliath mocked and intimidated the Israelites, and even King Saul and his soldiers were terrified.

Then David, a young shepherd who wasn't even part of the army, arrived to bring food to his brothers. When he heard Goliath defying Israel, David couldn't understand why everyone was so afraid. His confidence wasn't based on his own strength—he believed that God would deliver him, just as God had helped him protect his sheep from lions and bears.

David refused Saul's armor because he wasn't accustomed to it. Instead, he took his staff, sling, and five smooth stones.

When Goliath saw David, he mocked him. But David answered with one of the central declarations of the story:

“You come to me with a sword and spear and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord…” — 1 Samuel 17:45

David ran toward Goliath, placed a stone in his sling, and struck Goliath in the forehead. Goliath fell face down to the ground. David then used Goliath's own sword to finish the victory. Seeing their champion defeated, the Philistines fled.
