The parting of the Red Sea in Exodus 14 is one of the Bible’s clearest pictures of trusting God when there appears to be no way forward.
After generations of slavery in Egypt, God used Moses to lead the Israelites to freedom. But shortly after they left, Pharaoh changed his mind and sent his army after them. The Israelites found themselves trapped: the Red Sea was in front of them, Pharaoh’s army was behind them, and there appeared to be nowhere to escape.
The people became terrified and questioned Moses. But Moses told them:
“Do not be afraid. Stand firm…”

God then instructed Moses to raise his staff and stretch out his hand over the sea. A powerful east wind drove the waters back, dividing the sea and creating dry ground through the middle of it.
The Israelites walked through with the water standing on either side of them.
When Pharaoh's army followed, God caused confusion among the Egyptians. After Israel had safely crossed, Moses stretched his hand over the sea again. The waters returned, overwhelming Pharaoh's pursuing army.
