The story of the woman with the issue of blood is one of the most powerful stories of faith and healing in the Gospels. It appears in Matthew 9:20–22, Mark 5:25–34, and Luke 8:43–48.

For 12 years, a woman had suffered from continual bleeding. Mark tells us she had endured many treatments, spent everything she had on physicians, and instead of improving, she had gotten worse. Beyond her physical suffering, her condition would have made her ceremonially unclean under the Mosaic Law, profoundly affecting normal religious and social life.

Then she heard about Jesus.

As Jesus moved through a large crowd, she approached Him from behind. She believed that she didn't even need Jesus to stop and speak to her. Her faith was so strong that she thought, essentially:

If I can only touch His garment, I will be healed.

She reached through the crowd and touched the edge of His garment—and immediately the bleeding stopped.

Jesus knew something had happened. In Mark and Luke, He stopped and asked who had touched Him. His disciples were confused because people were pressing against Him from every direction. But Jesus wasn't talking about an ordinary touch.

The woman eventually came forward trembling, fell before Him, and told Him what she had done.

Jesus didn't rebuke her.

He called her “Daughter.”

Then came the words that define the entire story:

“Your faith has healed you.” — Jesus
